The Role

As part of the Westpac Institutional Bank (WIB) Legal team, this role supports the WIB Property portfolio to help the Westpac Group and our customers (in particular customers of WIB) achieve their goals through exceptional legal, governance and strategic service. The role seeks to provide proactive solutions while taking into account the Westpac Group’s objectives, risk tolerances and governance framework and our customers’ business and their strategic and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality advice to WIB that is accurate, timely, cost effective and commercial.

  • Work closely with our key internal business partners – particularly in WIB’s Institutional Property business
  • Demonstrate excellent time and matter management.
  • Support the Westpac Group’s risk strategy by influencing, negotiating and consulting with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Instruct and manage the delivery of any required external legal and other advice in a cost effective and efficient manner.
  • Keep up to date with legislation and regulatory reform, risk management frameworks and procedures in order to provide quality advice to internal business partners.
  • Work co-operatively within a team environment that demands a flexible approach to practice mix and a willingness to share in team development.

What you need to succeed

  • Be admitted as a solicitor/legal practitioner in Australia;

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and post admission experience – 5+ PQE preferred
  • Experience within Banking & Finance running large $ complex lending transactions.
  • Top-tier private practice and/or in-house legal experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills including the ability to prioritise and multitask.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to build and sustain key relationships, including third party service providers such as panel firms.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong drafting and technical skills, attention to detail and outcomes focus.
  • Excellent professional, commercial and personal judgement, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Computer literacy (Outlook, Word & Excel).
