Corrections Victoria is responsible for the direction, management and operation of Victoria’s corrections system, which incorporates prisons and Community Correctional Services, developing and implementing policies, programs and services that ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners and seeks to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.The Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is the central reception point for all male prisoners, whether convicted or unconvicted, sentenced or remanded, entering the Victorian Prison system. MAP is a multi storey, maximum-security prison that can accommodate 286 prisoners. The MAP also operates the Melbourne County Court, Supreme Court and Supreme Court Appeals custody facilities and the St Vincent’s Hospital holding cells.

The Operations Manager manages the high level, day-to-day operational needs of the prison contributing to the ongoing strategic planning, implementation and improvement of prison operations.

The Operations Manager will be responsible for:

  • managing a team of custodial and non-custodial officers delivering a range of correctional services to the MAP & Courts
  • overseeing all aspects of prisoner management, whilst ensuring that policies and procedures are followed.

The position encompasses human resource management, including Performance Management, coaching and developing staff, OH&S requirements, E.E.O. legislation responsibilities and staff employment and training requirements.

A critical feature of the role is extensive liaison with internal staff and external stakeholders and preparation of informed contributions to enhance process and service delivery while developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to Prison and Court custody activities. Further, the role is expected to identify operational and service delivery deficiencies and implement strategic solutions.
