Our Community Laws team are an innovative group of professionals that strive to set new standards. This challenging and rewarding role is on the frontline of services offered by Council to the local community with a broad spectrum of responsibilities.

As a Community Laws Officer, you will be involved in:

  • Complex Investigations under the Domestic Animals Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act such as serious dog attacks and matters of animal cruelty.
  • Investigating offences under Council’s General Provisions Local Law, Environment Protection Act , Road Safety Road Rules and Road Safety Act .
  • Animal management; which includes containing loose dogs, conducting permit inspections, ensuring compliance for Declared Dangerous Dogs, securing stock out on roads and ensuring that regulations and Codes of Practice are adhered to by animal owners and Domestic Animal Businesses.
  • Promoting responsible pet ownership and engaging with the community.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to deal with the public across a range of complex and challenging situations.
  • Experience in investigation and enforcement.
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislations.
  • The ability to solve problems.
  • Confidence around animals, particularly dogs.
  • Good computer skills.

The usual working hours for this role will be 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday but here may also be opportunities to work additional overtime. This role will require you to participate in an on call roster. The role will also require you to undergo regular training, such as conflict resolution, baton training and first aid. A tool of trade vehicle is available for travel to and from work.
