About the Agency

Community Services, in the Department of Family and Community Services, performs

statutory child protection functions and provides, co-ordinates or funds the provision of support services for vulnerable families, children, young people and communities in need.

Community Services’ activities include assisting families to protect and care for their children; child protection assessment; providing and funding accommodation and support services for children and young people who can no longer live with their families; funding the provision of services for people who are homeless or in crisis; regulating childcare; and coordinating services for people affected by disasters.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide psychological assessment, related reports and therapeutic intervention where relevant to children at risk, children in care, or other Community Services’ clients and their families/carers, referred by the Caseworker.

In this role you will provide consultation and written advice where relevant to staff and managers to assist in the decision making process. Provide training to internal staff and to foster parents and external agencies in relation to children placed in their care.

To be successful in this role, you will need;

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology and at minimum general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).
  • Knowledge of theoretical and therapeutic frameworks that underpin assessment and intervention in the context of child abuse and neglect, the legal and ethical issues in providing forensic psychological services, children’s mental health including assessment and support strategies for carers.
  • Knowledge of strengths and limitations of standardised and non-standardised psychological testing, questionnaires and rating scales, behavioural intervention techniques, counselling techniques, the general framework in relation to the Care and Protection Policy and Procedures, cultural issues relating to parenting, child-rearing and child development, child neuropsychology, and the external services available to meet the assessed needs of the child.
  • The ability to perform clinical work that includes emotional, cognitive and therapeutic assessment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work as a member of a specialised team to provide regular reports to stakeholders, conduct research in the psychological field, and present such findings.

Job Notes

This is a temporary 28hr per week part time role in accordance with the Government Sector Employment Act 2013 for a period of up to twelve (12) months.
