Council’s Environmental Management and Public Health Unit requires an enthusiastic, experienced professional with a high standard of customer service to provide, promote and maintain Environmental Health Services through regulation, education and health related programs. The key aim of this role is to enhance and protect the public health and the environment of the Lake Macquarie LGA through inspection, review and assessment of development application as they relate to environmental health impacts including air, noise, water, land and public health issues and associated compliance.

You will be responsible for:

  • process referrals for Development Applications, and provide technical environmental advice and recommendations
  • respond to requests for advice involving review of development proposals, design and issues
  • undertake regular inspections in accordance with licences and ensure inspection fees are raised
  • undertake environmental audits in accordance with the sectional business plan and provide input to the annual environmental audit program
  • investigate pollution, environmental health matters, gather evidence, compile reports with recommendations
  • interpret and apply provisions of relevant legislation
  • serve orders and notices under the Local Government Act and notices under any other relevant Act or Regulation
  • attend lectures, seminars, staff training sessions and meetings as required
  • represent Council on local and regional bodies relating to environmental and public health issues

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • current drivers licence
  • degree or Diploma of Applied Science/Environmental Health or similar degree, with previous experience in an environmental health role
  • experience in the assessment of complex reports for development applications, planning proposals and planning instruments for environmental health impacts including air, noise, water, land and public health issues
  • demonstrated commitment to a team philosophy and a willingness to participate in continuous improvement of work practices
  • excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to relate to people both internally and externally to the organisation
  • highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) with demonstrated conflict resolution and mediation skills
  • an understanding of Council’s Environmental Health service’s roles, responsibilities and programs delivered by the unit
  • commitment to participate in the development, implementation and management of health promotion activities and/or initiatives

Salary: $78,021 to $83,996 per annum plus superannuation
